Community Engagement and Cultural Exchange at Pusan National University: Introducing Manufacturing Indonesian Batik to the World

Busan, South Korea – April 7, 2026 – Universitas Tarumanagara (UNTAR) conducted an international community engagement and cultural exchange program at Pusan National University, bringing together international students and academic staff in an interactive and insightful cultural session.

The program aimed to showcase Indonesia’s cultural heritage through an in-depth exploration of batik, a traditional textile art widely recognized for its philosophical depth and intricate craftsmanship. Participants were introduced to the historical background of batik, its cultural relevance in Indonesian society, and its continuous development in response to technological advancements.

A key highlight of the session was the comprehensive explanation of the batik production process from both traditional and modern perspectives. The UNTAR delegation demonstrated the manual technique using canting and wax-resist dyeing, alongside the application of machinery and emerging technologies that improve efficiency while maintaining artistic integrity. This integrated approach underscored the role of engineering innovation in preserving and advancing cultural heritage.

Beyond its technical dimension, batik was also presented as a strong representation of Indonesian cultural identity. It is widely used not only for formal occasions but also as an institutional uniform, symbolizing unity and national pride. Through contextual explanations and storytelling, participants developed a deeper understanding of how batik embodies Indonesian values and social narratives.

This initiative forms part of UNTAR’s ongoing commitment to strengthening international collaboration and enhancing its global academic presence. By introducing batik to an international audience, the program fostered cross-cultural understanding while highlighting Indonesia’s contributions to art, culture, and applied technology.

The activity was organized by a multidisciplinary team of faculty members from various fields, including engineering, communication, business, law, psychology, and information technology. Representing the Faculty of Engineering-UNTAR, Ir. Didi Widya Utama, S.T., M.T., Ph.D. a faculty member in the Mechanical Engineering Program, delivered key insights into technological advancements in batik production, emphasizing the intersection of engineering and cultural preservation.

This program reflects Universitas Tarumanagara’s dedication to integrating cultural diplomacy with academic excellence, reinforcing its position within the global academic community while fostering pride in Indonesia’s rich cultural heritage.
